316 (UNS S31600/06Cr17Ni12Mo2) and 316L (UNS S31603/022Cr17Ni12Mo2) are austenitic stainless steels containing 2.0-3.0% molybdenum and 10-14% nickel, offering superior chloride corrosion resistance, pitting resistance, and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 304. The ultra-low carbon version of 316L (C≤0.03%) completely eliminates intergranular corrosion after welding, making it the preferred material for high-demand applications in chemical, marine, and medical industries.
